Classroom Design and Renovation

More classrooms have been equipped with data projectors for use with laptop computers. New lecterns equipped with a network port, projector and audio inputs make it easy for faculty to "plug and play." Laptops are available on a short trem loan basis for classroom applications. Keys available at Media Equipment (Kerr Hall 160) are required to power up the data projectors.

Obsolete Equipment as of Fall 2005
(May 23, 2005)

Manufacturers of instructional technology continually make new and improved products for the University community and discontinue the production of older equipment. We apologize in advance for any resulting inconvenience, but beginning Fall Quarter 2005, Classroom Services will end support of the following obsolete media:

3/4" Videotape
There are no new decks for purchase nor are there parts to repair our inventory. While we cannot support playback of this media, Television Services can assist in transferring existing 3/4” titles to another format such as DVD or VHS (with permission of the copyright holder). Please contact Ray Tracy at 893-8014 to schedule a transfer. If the tape is degraded or copyright is not intact, please see the Film/Video Ordering website for information on finding the title in another format: http://www.id.ucsb.edu/IR/FO/fo.html

Zip Disks
Zip disks have a record of unreliability, are bulky, require proprietary software and are relatively expensive by unit of storage space when compared to USB flash (jump) drives. If you need assistance transferring your files to another medium, such as a USB flash drive, or wish to create an account for storing files on our network accessible server, please contact Media Equipment at 893-3549.

16mm film support
Again, due to poor equipment availability and reliability issues, we will only be able to support 16mm film display in the following classrooms:
Campbell Hall
Buchanan Hall 1910, 1920, 1930, 1940
Isla Vista Theaters I and II

A/V/Video Recharges for Deliveries Postponed
(December 29, 2003)

As a result of the outstanding efforts by our faculty and their departmental classroom schedulers, Associate Vice Chancellor Ronald W. Tobin has announced that recharges for A/V and video equipment delivery will not be recharged in Winter Quarter 2004.

Budget Cuts Eliminate Free A/V/Video Deliveries
(4 June 2003)

Free A/V and video equipment delivery will no longer be available beginning Winter Quarter 2004. Exceptions will be made for ADA related issues. Every effort should be made to match faculty needs with properly equipped classrooms.

Several years ago, an incentive program to match faculty technology needs with properly equipped classrooms resulted in significant cost savings to the campus. Prior to the establishment of a recharge policy to recover delivery costs for computers and data-projectors, over 30 deliveries of equipment per day were being made. After notifying departments that free access to the equipment could be obtained by either properly scheduling classrooms or on a customer pick-up basis, the number of deliveries dropped to an average of five per day.

The advantages to using installed equipment are many:

  1. Faculty do not have to schedule individual uses of instructional equipment. A classroom request is made once and faculty have access to the equipment throughout the quarter without any additional scheduling.
  2. Staff do not have to take time (and money) to schedule students to deliver equipment. They also do not have to hire back-up students in the event that a scheduled student fails to show up for a particular job.
  3. Faculty do not have to worry that portable equipment might not be delivered on-time.
  4. Installed equipment tends to be more reliable than equipment that has to survive multiple daily trips across campus. Classrooms are checked on a periodic basis to maintain reliability. Equipped classrooms also have an intercom system which allows faculty to instantly report any problems.
  5. Reducing equipment delivery costs allows the campus to invest in newer instructional equipment resulting in better and more reliable tools for the faculty.

Given the success of the recharge incentive, the multiple ways to obtain access to instructional equipment without any recharges, and the necessity to control escalating equipment delivery costs, the recharge policy will be extended to include all instructional equipment deliveries in the Winter Quarter of 2004.

Please work with the Registrar's Office and your faculty to help avoid recharges.

Further information on equipped classrooms may be found at www.id.ucsb.edu/ir/CLASSROOMS/info.html

How to avoid recharges on computers and data projectors
(April 4, 2000)

Beginning in the Fall Quarter of 2000, Instructional Resources will be implementing new policies in order to more efficiently meet the skyrocketing demand for computers and data projectors. See the Classroom Computer Technology Plan for details. The plan involves installing more self-service computer equipment in classrooms and charging for delivery services in non-equipped rooms. (May 21, 1999).

The Classroom Renovation Committee and Executive Vice Chancellor have recently approved the installation of lockboxes with laptops in 18 classrooms currently equipped with data projectors and network ports. Including the 20 classrooms already equipped with computer lecterns, this will bring the total of fully computer equipped classrooms to 38 by the beginning of the Fall Quarter.

Information on equipped classrooms including everything from slide projectors to network ports and data projectors may be found on the UCSB Classroom Info page.
